Meet Our Instructors

Sailing Director
Jamie Halpin
Sailing Director Halpin started sailing aboard the original Surfrider at the tender age of 2 weeks. At five years old he graduated up to Windsong. He raced Lasers and Sharks in high school. He worked as a physics teacher in Canada, while cruising Windsong in the Great Lakes. After a year long cruise from Canada to Panama, he taught for four years in Korea. Another year of cruising brought Windsong to Florida, and Director Halpin to Uzbekistan, China, and finally, the Bahamas to teach at LIS. Director Halpin retired from teaching high school in 2025 and took on the full time position of Sailing Director at GBSC. He is a CANSail Level 2 Dinghy Sailing Instructor, a BSA Instructor Evaluator, and holds ASA Keelboat Instructor Certifications for 101, 103, 104, 105, and 118.

Captian Clennardo Pratt
Captain Clennardo learned to sail right here a GBSC. He races Lasers at the national level and also works at Lucaya Watersports & Tours. He became a BSA Sailing Instructor under the tutelage of Bahamian Olympic Laser sailor Robert Dunkley. He also holds his Bahamian Class B Captain's Licence.

Ayden Bain
Ayden raced Optis at the national level and is now racing Sunfish, Lasers, and E-Class sloops at the national level. He also competes internationally in triathlons. He is Conchman, the winner of Freeport's annual triathlon. He holds his BSA Sailing Instructor certification

Junior Instructor
Craig Carey
Craig has been sailing for 8 years. He races Optis and E-Class sloops at the national level. He took third place in the 2024 Derek Lee Regatta in Abaco. His favourite sailing memory is sailing Surfrider through a storm.

Junior Instructor
Darren Cooper
Darren has been sailing for 3 years. He races Optis and E-Class sloops at the national level. He took second place in the 2024 Derek Lee Regatta in Abaco. His favourite sailing memory is pitch-poling a Hobie Cat.

Treasurer
Chris Paine
Chris has also been with us since the beginning in 2006. Our most active director. He takes care of hall and well rentals, and pays the bills. He calls the plumber and electrician to keep our old clubhouse functioning and purchases all of the parts to keep our fleet sailing. He sails an utra fast Corsair Pulse 600 trimaran.

Commodore
Joe Thompson
Joe has been with us since the beginning in 2006. He won the Opti Nationals back when Optis were made of wood and sailors were made of steel. He also raced the orginal A-Class Lucayan Lady.

Fund Raising Director
Alex Thompson
We owe a lot to Alex. She gets the money to keep GBSC running and to keep our sailors travelling to regattas throughout the Bahamas. She organizes our trips to regattas and keeps Sailing Director Halpin from going insane while travelling with a dozen children.
